Well, I've always thought he seemed like he could be Robin from the future or something. They've got the same voice actor, it's just deeper for Red X. Plus, Red X seemed pretty attracted to Star (though it could've just been physical attraction alone), and then there was this:
Robin: I thought you didn't like to play the hero.
Red X: Doesn't mean I don't know how.
That kind of implied that he has been a hero before, and while that doesn't mean he had to have been Robin, I can't rule out the possibility.

#1: Robin
#2: Wally West (yeah I know Kid Flash isn't really the evil type but...)
#3: Terra (don't ask how. but it would be a nice twist)

Maybe Red X is...is...STARFIRE! Or maybe he's one of Slade's robots.
He always gets in there with those robots. It gets annoying. he could have made one that looked like Robin's former alter ego just to freak him out.
